I was recently asked to video myself reading a story and telling a little about my career. After retiring from the education world I became a realtor! I was asked to do this by one of my former teachers. She sent me the link to two sites that are amazing for students at school and home. The first one is EPIC Books. It has so many books your students can read for free. The site can also read the book to your students.
The other site was Loom. It can record you reading the book while at the same time connecting to EPIC to show the pictures in the book. I have to be honest. I am NOT quick at using technology. I only had an hour to accomplish the task before I had to be somewhere. I realized it was going to take me more than an hour to figure it out ( it would not take you long) so I just read a book I had at home and used my phone. But, I definitely want to tackle these two sites. It would be so fun to read to grandchildren this way!
I have attached the video of me reading the book to the students. I wanted to show you something you can do at home.
My second graders wrote books in class about 30 years ago. I decided to write books while they were writing. I wrote the books making my own children the heroes in the books. It was so fun! I used a random character for my son’s book. My daughter had rabbits in her nursery and angels were something special during her adoption so I incorporated them into the book. I am no artist so I tried to free hand pics from books by Tomie dePaolo. There are so many easier ways to write and illustrate children’s books now.
If you don’t feel like taking on the writing of your own story then there is another way to make your child the hero in the book. You just select a book and as you read replace the name of the main character with your child’s name. Your children will love this! There is nothing better than to read aloud to your child.
